Hawaii Sprint Customers: Do we get Google Voice?

I just got my email from Google today announcing that Sprint and Google voice has been integrated. This *could* meant that Hawaii phone numbers, previously denied 808 area codes (from what I understand, due to Hawaii regulations) might actually see their Sprint numbers (yes, 808 ones) work with Google voice. I have too much on my plate to play with this during the day but tonight is another story. Stay tuned. I will attempt to activate Google Voice on my Sprint EVO 4G phone and will report on the results. Let’s keep our collective fingers crossed!

Your Sprint number becomes your Google Voice number so that when people call your Sprint mobile number, it rings all the phones you want.

Update: 11:13pm 5/3/2011

The answer: NO! I’m really disappointed. Though the Google error message didn’t explain why my Sprint number wouldn’t work, I can only guess it’s related to the Hawaii-specific regulatory restrictions.

oh well. bummer.

Update: 5/11/2011

Apparently it’s just me. Others in Hawaii are reporting success. I’m going to call Sprint and find out why. My guess: I ported my number over from Tmobile and hence it can’t go Google. Just a guess. I’ll keep y’all posted.

Best Android Apps – April 2011

Nearly all of the apps I use on my Sprint EVO 4G phone are covered in this article and there’s a bunch of apps that I’ve never tried. Got Android? Lookin’ for apps? This is a great and current list of ones to at least try. Make sure you read the comments in the Marketplace to see if there are any problems with your specific model. Actual mileage may vary. Have fun!

Google Talk & Video Coming to an Android near you

Google had to do this in order to compete with Apple’s facetime. And of course they have one-upped the iPhone: you can do video chat on 3G and 4G networks as opposed to iPhone which only does it if connected to wifi. The only bad news is that it is being released first for the Nexus S and then later for the rest of us. Finally we can make use of that front facing camera. Can’t wait!

Android has more free apps than iPhone

The structural superiority of the Android market-based approach continues to gain steam. Apple’s iPhone is a fantastic phone, but it just can’t compete singlehandedly against an entire industry of hardware manufacturers, carriers, and developers. While I give credit to iPhone as a better hardware platform and better software integration, this advantage will continue to shrink to the point where it becomes irrelevant. Google’s continued exclusive software advances on the mobile platform will help Android phones overcome any hardware disintegration deficiencies. Pardon my wonky geekout

According to Distimo, Google’s Android Market currently offers 134,342 free applications for download, while Apple’s App Store for iPhone offers 121,845 free applications.

Google releases Android Docs app. Eat your heart out, iphone’ers!

Android users have yet another reason to stick their tongues out at iphone users: a seriously functional google docs app for android phone.

If you “qualify” head on over to the android store and install your copy.

From Google:

“Increasingly, people are using mobile phones to access information — from email to web browsing to editing documents. Part of getting work done on the go is being able to easily access, edit and share content, which is why we’re happy to announce the new Google Docs app for Android.”

Google Mobile releases key findings from research on smartphones

In case you’ve been living under a rock, the world has shifted, again, to mobile phones. Personally? I watch videos on my phone more than I watch them on TV. I probably use the mobile browser at least as much as I use my desktop. And one thing is for darn sure, when I’m out and about, my mobile phone is my brain extension. Google’s research will confirm what many of us already know: mobile is huge

Sprint launching Nexus S 4G

For those of who want the “pure” Android experience, the Nexus S 4G will connect to Sprint’s WiMax network. I have the Sprint EVO 4G and though I’m very satisfied with the phone and use the 4G WiMax network often, I will probably take a very, very serious look at Verizon’s LTE network next year when my Sprint contract ends. Why? While I love the WiMax network, it’s really a second network that you have to turn on and off. It’s almost like wifi. I want my phone connected to a high speed network all the time. I don’t want to have to tell my phone to “connect” to the 4G network. I want 4G everywhere. WiMax doesn’t do that and I personally believe that because it requires a conscious switching on/off is why phones like the Nexus S and EVO 4G do NOT have video chat on Skype.

Google’s Android takes market lead over iPHone

I predicted this in early 2010. Nice to see it validated. Android will win for the same reason why Windows won the PC war: they have a software platform available to all manufacturers and carriers and the price is right

Why Android will take over the world

This post is slightly long but describes in great detail why, from an economics perspective, Android via Google will dominate the industry. More broadly, it describes why Google is a massive game changer to the tech industry in general.
